Beyond The Dream House: Who is Barbie?

Standard

Of course we know Barbie is everyone’s favorite fashionista.

But what’s her story?

Barbie’s creation was inspired by the mid-Century German fashion doll, Bild Lilli. Handler observed European children’s penchant for the adult-like figurine, and decided to create her own ‘woman’ doll for American children. After returning from a trip to Europe, Handler debuted her creation at the American International Toy Fair.

Barbie’s name is taken from Ruth’s daughter, Barbara Handler, who was 18 years old at the time of Barbie’s creation.

Barbie made her debut in 1959 with a striped swimsuit, blonde ponytail, and red lipstick.

Barbie was a creation that helped women realize they can be anything they want to be.

Barbie traveled into space in 1965, four years before man walked on the moon.

In 1992, Barbie ran for president for the first time and has run in nearly every election year since. In 2016, she ran with the first all-female ticket.

• In 1973, Barbie saved lives as a surgeon, at a time when very few women were in the operating room.

• In 1985, she took to the boardroom as “Day to Night” CEO Barbie, just as women began to break the glass ceiling.

• To encourage more girls to explore the STEM field, Barbie has been a computer engineer, video game developer, Mars explorer, and robotics engineer.

Barbie has had over 250 inspirational careers including astronaut, pilot, firefighter, journalist, and entrepreneur to name a few.

Barbie’s latest diversity doll line includes dolls with prosthetic limbs, vitiligo and even hairless dolls.

You’ve got to admit, Barbie really does have it all, with over a billion pairs of shoes and more than a hundred outfits every year.

She’s traveled the world and worked so many jobs.

She truly is the worlds most beloved doll.

Come On Barbie Let’s Go To Zara!

Zara is the latest brand to hop on the Barbie Mania train.

It includes the newly iconic gingham dress featured in the flick, and the retro black-and-white striped swimsuit that the OG Barbie wore in 1959 when she made her debut.

Featuring life-sized sets from Barbie’s universe in the movie, the pop-up stores offer screens projecting scenes that allow visitors to immerse themselves in Barbie’s world.

Visitors can also utilize themed fitting rooms or play with a vending machine.

Totes adorbs tote bags!!

The casual Malibu Barbie looks are fun and reminiscent of vintage barbie.

Of course Glam Barbie is everyone’s favorite look.

J’adore DIOR

Standard

Designer Kim Jones celebrated his fifth year with DIOR with a bang!!!

The historic courtyards of the Ecole Militaire served as a unique runway for Dior’s men’s show this year. With the Eiffel Tower in the background, the show was even more magnificent.

The entire cast of models was rose up from beneath the runway in a three-wide, 17-long grid of looks.

The collection combined feminine elements of Dior’s past with a modern men’s aesthetic, effectively capturing a gender-fluid vibe.

He transformed the house’s iconic flower women designs into “hommes fleurs” or “flower men.”

Classic tailored suits with a twist.

Overcoats give a vintage vibe.

Bright neon colors give the perfect contrast to the heavier textures.

I love subtle flashes of the preppy style. School uniform inspired, hemmed suit lapels, and knee-high socks.

Accessories featured animal prints, tweeds and neon colors.

This show was a bold statement by Jones, highlighting the fluidity of gender in fashion.

Fashion is about expression. The collection tackled society’s shifting perceptions of manhood. Much needed in todays world.

In so many ways, this show was simply GROUNDBREAKING.

The Louis Vuitton Lovers Presents: Pharrell Williams

Standard

In what can only be described as fashions most magnificent runway, Pharrell Williams launched his first collection as Louis Vuitton’s Creative Director, following the death of Virgil Abloh.

Many felt he was not qualified to fill Abloh’s shoes.

This show proved he was.

Louis Vuitton closed down the Pont Neuf bridge in Paris on Tuesday, where the show was held at sunset with a full orchestra, gospel choir and over 70 looks.

Several things I’ve taken away from this show.

1. The Speedy

The Speedy, Louis Vuitton’s most recognizable bag was featured in many looks.

Duffel bags were introduced with their classic monogram, but updated in red and white, emerald green, bright orange, and blue.

“The Speedy was always a men’s canvas bag until they made a smaller version for Audrey Hepburn in 1965,” Pharrell said in a press release shared after the show. “I wanted to take something I felt would be unisex and just make a great bag for humans. It is an everyday icon conceived for every walk of life.”

2. Damier Ebene

Pont Neuf was transformed into the Vuitton runway, and featured a continuous strip of the iconic Damier motif that would be heavily woven throughout the collection.

The checkerboard design, which dates back to 1889, has been reimagined through Williams’ lens. A pixelated iteration, dubbed “Damoflage,”

3. Pixilation

“Damouflaged” pieces combine Camo with Minecraft and appears throughout his collection.

4. Streetwear Meets Art

Many pieces look like they came straight from the walls of the art galleries in Paris.

5. Bright Colors

Louis Vuitton has always used primary colors as accents. Williams leveled it up a notch.

Any doubts about about Pharrell Williams’ qualifications have most definitely been quashed.

His 2023 Spring/Summer line does not disappoint.

I’m getting Classic ‘50s old Hollywood vibes with a modern twist.

“We really wanted to channel Elizabeth Taylor and Katharine Hepburn tailoring and ask what’s the modern Marilyn, the modern Bianca Jagger?” Siriano was quoted.

Ladies in red always slay!

There’s always some fun pieces from him.

Christian Siriano has always dressed all women of all sizes for all occasions. And he will always be one of my all time favorites for that reason.
